Professionals to teach kids money sense

Students may enjoy an occasional classroom distraction, but when the purpose is to prepare them for success in a frenzied global economy, grown-ups are hungry to make a program of it.

Such is the plan at Coronado K-8 School, where a new Junior Achievement program — the largest in Tucson — will begin bolstering the financial wits of 1,200 students from all grade levels this week.

Nearly 40 volunteers from the community crowded around student-sized tables in the school’s library, enthusiastic to share their business sense with a younger generation during an afternoon orientation meeting with Junior Achievement representatives on Jan. 31.

“What you’re doing is a huge, huge service to the community,” said Junior Achievement District Director Rita Weatherholt. “You are bringing your business and real-life experience to the classroom.”
